I have a Lenevo 3000 N100 laptop with a 110 GB hard disk. I have a lot of data and the free space went below 10GB. Yesterday, for some unknown reason my explorer showed free disk space as 5GB. I didn't know what was wrong. I took the following measures to solve this issue:
1.)Firstly, I thought it was some malware and scanned the disk with AVG antivius and anti-spyware, Calmwin antivirus and Spybot. They did not detect anything.
2.)Then I used WinDirStat to see what was eating up my space but I was not able to make out what was going on.
3.)Checked if the system restore is on. It was not.
4.)Checked if Lenovo rescue and recovery had any backups. There were no backups.
5.)Finally, I decided to defragment my hard disk with Diskkeeper.
After the defragmentation, I checked the free disk space in the explorer and I had recovered more than 5GB!!!!!
Defragment you disk regularly as it can save valuable disk space from getting wasted. And, yes backup regularly.
